After eight years of peaceful slumber, in which it has slept on seemingly unaware of the happenings in the world outside its lair, that strange little beast, Liberalis-Leftus, has finally woken from its hibernation to once again lift up its voice in protest at all it deems wrong with the world. For those who have been awake throughout that eight years, it might seem odd that Liberalis has just miraculously rediscovered its voice after so long. However, in its defense, it should be noted that the natural temperament of Liberalis causes it to screech loudly whenever it sees a beast from the enemy camp doing something which it disapproves, but to close its eyes, roll over and go back to sleep if it catches one of its own kind doing the exact same thing.

But since Liberalis has been hibernating for fully eight years, it becomes a sort of duty to inform it of some of what it has missed while lying comatose in the warmth of its den.

For instance, it appears to have missed the unconstitutional drone bombing programme of one of its favourite handlers, Mr Obama, which killed hundreds of people without trial, many of whom will have been entirely innocent. It also appears to have missed Mr Obama’s decision to let Mrs Clinton off her leash to destroy Libya, not only producing a failed state for various jihadi organisations to fill the ensuing vacuum, but also creating an unprecedented migrant crisis in Europe to boot.

Another thing Liberalis appears to have missed is Mr Obama’s war on Syria, conducted not by overt invasion, as his predecessor might have done, but by the arming and funding of jihadist mercenaries to topple the leader of a country 1,000s of miles from the US, and which posed no threat to America. So too does it appear to have missed the deliberate playing of the identity politics card, which left race relations in the US in a worse state than at any time since the civil rights movement, long before Mr Trump got anywhere near the White House.

It also appears to have missed the creation of the biggest state surveillance programme ever seen in the history of the world. Oh and to top it off, somehow Liberalis seems to have missed the utilising of far-right Stepan Bandera worshippers to topple the legitimate Government of Ukraine, which unsurprisingly resulted in a civil war in that country, and needlessly precipitated the worst crisis in US / Russian relations since 1963.

Now I know that in these days in which we live it has become the custom of some to think only in binary terms (except of course when it comes to things that really are binary, such as male and female), and so all of the above will be taken by some as evidence of a gushing love for Mr Trump. Not so. My view of Mr Trump is that he is a man for whom money acts as a substitute for principles, who is an opportunist not a conservative, and I am quite sure that given both time and opportunity he has the potential to match Mr Obama’s ability to ignore the constitution, abuse his power, and produce a list of follies equal to that mentioned above as pertaining to his predecessor. Time will tell.

But isn’t it fascinating how Liberalis-Leftus, which raised not a peep about Mr Obama riding roughshod over the constitution (like failing to get Congressional approval for his wars), or his waging war for all eight years of his presidency (a presidential record, by the way), is now embarking on its George Soros-sponsored prowl, crying pink murder against a man who has only been in office for a couple of weeks. Do spare a thought for the poor creature, though, as it screeches its diatribes against Mr Trump and his apparently unprecedented evil, for it must be exceedingly hard for it to speak having swallowed a number of camels only to find itself now choking on a gnat salad.

Camels and gnats? Really? Judge for yourself. Which is worse, introducing temporary restrictions on people from seven countries, or bombing one of those sovereign countries (Libya) on a completely false pretext, turning it into a failed state and creating thousands upon thousands of refugees? Which is worse, stopping Syrians from entering the US, or getting the CIA to run arms from Benghazi, through Turkey, and into Syria where they just happened to fall into the hands of jihadist groups allied with Al-Nusra, and even into the hands of ISIS. Seriously, which is worse, dealing cackhandedly with a refugee situation, or creating that situation in the first place?

I can only conclude from the behaviour and words of Liberalis-Leftus over the over the past week or so, that it sees cack-handed, temporary immigration bans as far worse than actively destroying sovereign nations. Or is it rather the case that had Mr Trump been president for the last eight years, and had he done exactly the same as the “progressive” Mr Obama did, Liberalis would have found its voice long before now.

Brendan O’Neill summed it up well in his piece for the Spectator:

“In what sort of moral universe is it considered worse to restrict the freedom of movement of the citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries than it is to participate in the near-destruction of a Muslim country? In the warped moral universe of anti-Trump hysteria. In the historically illiterate world that has been fashioned by the protesters against him, who tell us he is abnormal and therefore the rest of them are normal.”

Yup. That’s the moral universe we are apparently now supposed to inhabit. It remains to be seen whether Mr Trump can match his predecessor for dangerous, stupid and downright wicked policies. But whatever he does, you can be sure that the ignoble beast Liberalis-Leftus will magnify his actions in exactly the opposite way that they minimised the actions of his predecessor.

  1. I have been rather busy of late and although I read this article a long time ago now I am just getting to my reply.

Rob, I think you missed an opportunity with this article to speak to the liberals you are mocking. I know I had to force myself to read through it, because your tone was heavily off-putting. Your e-mails directly to me lacked that, and I was able to engage in conversation and bridges of understanding. I realize you are writing to your audience, and further realize that rather few liberals would ever find your blog (much less spend the time reading it).

I say this because I think liberals WOULD BENEFIT FROM HEARING what you have to say. I encourage you to reach out to liberals, and explain (in some other forum perhaps) in unladen terms why you take the position you do. I had not, for instance, thought of the U.S. actions in Libya as destroying a sovereign nation. I had not considered that the Russian government and military, if I met them, might not be the odious people I imagine them to be. I had not thought of the USA as being “at war” for Obama’s entire presidency. (And I still am leaning away from agreeing with your analysis, but I hadn’t considered these points before.)
